Come join TLC in the Santa Cruz Mountains for this year’s Retreat, to be held at Pema Osel Ling, a lovely, peaceful, 116-acre Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Center. Enjoy the rolling hills, sunlit fields and serene Redwoods, quiet trails, wonderful pool, and participate in profoundly touching workshops and activities.

This year, as last year, the format has been adjusted by adding a full day to allow hair pullers, skin pickers, and family members to focus more deeply in areas of healing, feeling, fun, and spirituality that are not generally available in a conference or therapeutic format. The size of the Retreat has also been reduced, to create a more intimate atmosphere and the opportunity to really experience group process. Thus, if you are interested in attending, PLEASE register as soon as you make your decision.

After many, many, years, where so many of us have tried so many pathways, from medication management to diet, from prayer to acupuncture, from counseling to support groups, a deeper understanding is emerging of the absolute importance of acknowledging, and embracing, the inner processes that truly support recovery, no matter what your approach.

The TLC 16th Annual Retreat is designed to give you time to experience this process, to create a deeper understanding of the inner journey of living with, and healing from, trichotillomania and related body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as skin picking and nail biting.

During the Retreat, you will experience the opportunity to look at these chronic, often habituated behaviors and the associated mental patterns that can fuel them from new perspectives, and to meet others from all over. Last year alone had attendees from 34 states and 3 countries! Come together with others to educate yourself, share experiences, and practice new behaviors that can open pathways to healing on many levels. Spend time with facilitators who are profoundly knowledgeable about living with, and healing from, hair pulling and skin picking, and the dynamics that often surround them.

The Retreat will start at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening, August 15th, 2007 and end at noon on Sunday, August 19th, 2007. It is held in a very informal environment, similar to a summer camp actually. For those choosing to stay in the Sangha House, cabins, or yurt, bedding will be provided. For those staying in tent facilities, either ones we provide or ones you bring yourself, you will need to bring your own bedding or sleeping bags. Or, you can plan to stay at a local hotel 1/2 hour away from the Retreat site.

There will be special sessions for children and adolescents, and others specifically for parents, spouses and significant others. There will also be a special track addressing skin picking. There will also be larger group sessions. For adults, there will be a variety of different workshops, addressing several levels of need. This year will again include hairstylists familiar with trichotillomania, willing to offer a limited # of haircuts and consultations. We also hope to be able to offer facials by a trained esthetician. (Additional fees will apply for hair cuts and facials.) Some of the areas to be addressed for ALL Retreat attendees will be: family dynamics of living with trich/skin picking and how to change them; self-esteem issues and body image problems; skin picking and related behaviors; shame reduction; acceptance and integration; practical life-skills management; steps for relapse prevention; spiritual aspects and practice; various meditation techniques; prayer sessions (for those who wish to participate); sessions addressing the spiritual weariness of living with chronic body-focused conditions; games; hair styling and make-up application; creative expression; relaxation practices; yoga; and much, much more (including evening bonfires and Karaoke)! There will also be more time this year to swim in the lovely pool, take walks, do creative arts, or join informal chat groups.

The cost of the Retreat includes 11 complete meals, 4 nights accommodation (unless choosing to stay at a local hotel), all workshops, special events, and use of pool and the lovely grounds. If you stay onsite, you will need to bring toiletries, open hearts and open minds! (Sleeping bags also, if staying in tents.)

For an additional fee of $40 per person, you can reserve a roundtrip seat on our TLC Airport Charter Bus we will be leasing. This is a great and convenient way to get back and forth without having to rent a private vehicle or pay for a shuttle (average cost $60. one-way).

If you are interested in reserving a seat on the TLC Charter Bus, and booking your airline ticket, please make sure to arrive at San Jose Airport before 4:00pm on Wednesday, August 15th, 2007 and arrange your departure for after 1:30pm on Sunday August 19th. This way you can take the charter bus to and from the airport. If you do not take the bus, you will have to arrange your own transportation. If you will be driving, let us know and we will provide you with area maps.

We do realize that for some, finances are a major obstacle. Several partial scholarships will be available, along with payment plans. For more on financial arrangements, please call and speak with TLC staff. No presenter is paid, they are all volunteering their time. So, come and take advantage of this precious resource! After expenses, all profits (which are rare!) generated by the Retreat go directly to fund the Trichotillomania Learning Center’s ongoing efforts to reach those who still suffer in isolation.
