Trich in history
There is evidence through art and literature that hair pulling has been in existence for thousands of years. References to hair pulling are made in both The Bible and Homer's The Illiad. Numerous artists, through paintings and sculpture, have portrayed people pulling out their hair during times of crisis. The term trichotillomania was coined by Hallopeau in 1889 and is derived from the Greek words trich (hair), tillo (to pull) and mania (frenzy), thus describing a "hair pulling frenzy."
